Saturday 22nd March saw AMSA take to the bitterly cold Scunny track. The progress was immense from everyone and it was especially pleasing to see riders from all ages and abilities. The Experience Day was used by the SPIERS TRIERS, who all came from different disciplines to try speedway for the first time. Well done guys. Great to see a special friend of the Academy, Ian Gill coming along to see us and I'm sure he will be spending more time with us throughout the year. Big thanks to the rest of the AMSA team as always
Saturday 8th March saw AMSA take to the Sunny Scunny circuit with our 1st LADIES ONL Y EXPERIENCE DAY! It was a huge privilege to teach the ladies from the LIPPY LADIES MCC who took part. They were all awesome! Special Awards went to Bernadette Johnson for being the Rider of the Day and Jacqui Green for the fastest lap on the main track! Congratulations!
AMSA Review 2013
As we look back on the past year, you could be forgiven for thinking that AMSA actually stood for the Andy Meredith Swimming Academy, such has been the frustrating weather on many of the planned skidding days.
Nevertheless, enough days were 'ON' to see every participant make progress and when you see the achievements of the daring young (and not so young!) men it goes to show how a few words from 'a man who knows' CAN make a BIG difference. Age is no barrier and we have had riders on the track from 10 to 70!!
Let's have a look at some of the successes of the past twelve months.
Matt Williamson. Only started out on the shale in Nov 2012 and proved to be a natural. So much so, that during 2013 was given the opportunity to ride in the Buxton Hitmen National League team. The combination of competitive racing plus tuition at AMSA sessions has seen Matt become very much in demand for 2014. He has now got team places for the coming season with Scunthorpe (Premier League) and Cradley (National League).
Krys Bialecki. Boundless enthusiasm sums up Krys. He started riding at Scunthorpe practices and then became a regular at the AMSA sessions. Those early appearances on shale saw many falls but it was abundantly clear the lad had raw, natural talent. By listening to the coaching - and more importantly, putting it into practice - his progress has been startling which is shown by his appearances in the Open Class at Amateur meetings, when only a few months before he'd been lining up with the Novices.
Adam Extance. A young man who has grown up racing all forms of competition bikes, without trying speedway! 2013 saw him on the shale for the first time and proving himself very capable. Another rider to take on board AMSA coaching, which has seen mega-quick progress. He has done really well in the Scunthorpe Amateur series, where he now rides in the Support Class and for 2014 has a team place with Buxton. Adam LOVES his speedway and will surely go a long way in the sport.
Tom Bacon. Those of us who have seen Tom flying round the Buxton circuit at AMSA can see the talent he has. After doing his speedway 'apprenticeship' at the Derbyshire track, he entered his first ever amateur meeting last November (Scunthorpe) and won the Novice Event. Such talent on the bike has been quickly rewarded with a place in the Castleford Kings line-up in the MDL for 2014. Unfortunately a second appearance in an Amateur meeting, he fell and broke a bone in his wrist but is now fully recovered. One to watch in the coming season.
Scooter Webster and Layne Cupitt. Both GB Moto-X lads. Only recently decided to try shale action and came along to a private session with the AMSA team where their natural abilities on bikes, plus a few coaching pointers set them up for a foray into the world of amateur speedway. It went rather well! Their first competitive appearances at Scunthorpe (after only being on track literally a couple of times) and they found themselves on the rostrum -1st and 2nd in the Novice class. Scooter has been handed a Castleford Kings race jacket for the new season. Some progress!
John Gaskin. Another rider to watch in 2014 as he came an impressive third to Scooter and Layne in what was only his second-ever amateur meeting.
Ben Hewitt - Hinckley-based rider who has made excellent progress in 2013. Another young man who has availed himself of regular AMSA sessions before setting out on the Amateur racing scene. What a success he has been with rostrum finishes on every occasion, culminating in winning the September meeting with maximum points.
Tom Sipos. A youngster from Rugby who has progressed in the year from being a steady but unspectacular rider to a little 'flier' who finished 2013 by winning the Scunthorpe Novice A final in December. As a result has now been fast-tracked into the Support Class for 2014.
Sam Ward. A regular at AMSA sessions and who, with the assistance of AMSA, was offered a place with Stoke Potters during 2013.
Jack Walton (known as Jackylegs by his friends) He’s a top Junior Grasstrack star and has spent many hours on the track with us to improve his sliding skills
Jamie Halder Another of our young riders has just recently won the first round of the British Youth 150cc Class. He’s not stopped smiling yet!
The AMSA supported rider in 2014 will be Max Clegg. He will be given track time to enable him to improve his expertise. He will be riding in the National, Premier and Elite leagues at some time over the 2014 season. A busy lad!
What a fantastic list of successes for those young men, all of them displaying great attitude to learning and for whom 'The sky is the limit'
Of course, not everyone who attends an AMSA session is destined for the top! We have regular bookings from (not so) young men who are just happy to be 'living the dream'. They receive the same enthusiastic coaching from Andy and the AMSA crew and - in their own way - have all progressed.
Nigel Chappell. Loves his speedway with a passion and is always the first rider to arrive at the track! The confidence gained from the past year's training sessions saw him enter his first-ever amateur meeting at Scunthorpe but was unfortunately plagued with bike problems.
Derek Hunt. What an example to everyone and proving that age is definitely no barrier to having fun skidding on the shale. Every session Derek listens and learns and is definitely twisting that throttle just a bit further with each skid. Unlikely now to be World Champion but his obvious enjoyment is sufficient payback.
Ian Gill. Sadly, we have seen the last of this AMSA regular due to a bad crash. He would be the first to acknowledge that the fun he had on the bike - and the trophies that he won - was attributable to the friendly pointers the AMSA crew had provided.
From feedback received, unquestionably EVERY rider who pulled on the blue AMSA race bib at either Buxton or Scunthorpe has gained something from the experience.
The placement of some of the young fliers into teams for 2014 suggests that a rider/coach combination of natural talent, a great desire to learn plus clear pointers delivered in a one-to-one training CAN and DOES help the committed rider to make quick progress.
Some thank-yous to the folks who help AMSA.
A big thank you to Buxton and Scunthorpe speedway circuits for the hire of their tracks and AMSA look forward to continuing to work with them both throughout 2014.
